CLAY CALLAWAY: MUSIC
COLD WAR
(CLAY CALLAWAY)
June 12, 2009
Clay Callaway - Music / Lyric
Ty and I met on June 12th, 19 years ago. We were having a great time for about 3 weeks when he suddenly went cold towards me, finally revealing to me that he, "Can't live 'this lifestyle'." I told him the fact is you are what you are and your choice is to accept it or reject it. Either choice comes with it's own set of consequences. I choose to view life as a path towards love, guided by integrity. I'm sure harsher words were shared, but long forgotten in the light that we are still together, after all.
"Cold War" is about the emptiness brought on by being separated from love, unaswered questions, the hard and invisible barriers to reconciliation. "Free yourself to pass the border."
As friends have shared their various reactions to this song, I realized it touched people on many levels, one has a son in prison, another misses a love lost to AIDS, some relationships lost to unspoken expectations. How can hope survive without love? How can love survive without hope?
COLD WAR
Clay Callaway
The Iron Curtain's turned to glass.
But you're still like a holograph,
Sitting on the other side
Hidden from suspicious eyes.
Suspicious eyes.
Maybe we should start to share,
Focusing beyond the glare.
And start searching for a sign
And realize that politics and
Love are blind.
Is it cold in there?
I know that you can laugh,
But it's faded from your photograph
From all my tears.
Is it cold in there?
Press against the glass.
Free yourself to pass the border.
Is it cold in there?
Promises weren't always kept.
You were working as I slept.
Now we live our separate sins
With little change we'll join again.
Our worlds may end.
Is it cold in there?
Are your heart and hands both frozen?
Do you live the life you've chosen
For yourself?
Is it cold in there, baby?
Warm your heart a few degrees.
I can't stand to watch you freeze.
Is it cold in there?
Many times we lied.
So many times we tried
To figure out how love has lost its way.
But somehow in the end
I thought we'd still be friends.
How can we end this Cold War some day?
Perhaps a summit now and then
Could bring this Cold War to an end.
I'll put my weapons on the shelf
And see what's real for myself,
For myself.
Is it cold in there, baby?
Are your heart and hands both frozen?
Do you live the life you've chosen
For yourself?
Is it cold in there, baby?
Warm your heart a few degrees.
I can't stand to watch you freeze.
Is it cold in there?
I know that you can laugh.
Free yourself to pass the border.
